Fort Bragg Road Bid Awarded

(Fayetteville, N.C.) – The Fayetteville City Council on Monday awarded Highland Paving the bid to rehabilitate and resurface a portion of Fort Bragg Road. The project will extend from Bragg Boulevard southward to Churchill Drive for a distance of approximately 1.1 miles.

The work involves milling the roadway to the concrete, repairing the concrete, adjusting utility boxes, resurfacing in two to three lifts (layers of asphalt) and installing thermoplastic pavement markings. The construction period is projected to last 104 calendar days.

Fort Bragg Roadwas last resurfaced in the 1980s and is a complex project because the roadway includes five inches of asphalt and a seven-inch concrete base. The existing concrete base will be repaired with FiberCrete, a specialized reinforced repair material. When constructing a road, crews normally build curb and gutter first before installing the road, but Fort Bragg Road’s curb and gutter was included as one concrete pour along with the base.

The section of Fort Bragg Road from Bragg Boulevard to Devers Street and Barrington Circle, near Kiwanis Recreation Center, will be milled, repaired, and resurfaced. The segment of Fort Bragg Road from Devers Street and Barrington Circle to Churchill Drive will only be milled, as that portion of the road is anticipated to see more work in fall 2012. The reason the latter segment will only be milled is to coordinate a City storm drainage project to improve drainage in the residential neighborhood area of McNeill Circle and McPherson Avenue.

The City plans to notify drivers and area business owners about the rehabilitation project through electronic message boards placed two weeks prior to the work, hangtags that will notify individual business owners, Facebook and Twitter postings, and media releases. For more information about the project, citizens can call (910) 433-1661.
