Travel Means Business for Cumberland County
National Tourism Week 2017 Honors Those that Keep the Tourism Industry Strong

Cumberland County  – May 7st through May 13th is National Travel & Tourism Week, the week the US Travel Association designates to champion the value of travel to the national, state and local economies.  National Travel & Tourism Week was established by a congressional resolution in 1983.

The theme for 2017 ‘Faces of Travel’ shines a spotlight on the people that make up America’s travel industry. Travel employs more than 4,400 people in Cumberland County with a payroll of $93.59 million. *

In 2015, domestic travel to Cumberland County generated over $504 million in expenditures and $37.8 million in state and local tax revenues. This represents a $116.83 tax savings to each county resident.

“There’s no better time to talk about the value of tourism to Cumberland Count than National Travel and Tourism Week,” says John Meroski, Fayetteville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (FACVB) President and CEO.  “Travel is a significant economic generate for our community.

FACVB staff have a few activities planned for National Tourism Week:

Throughout the week, the FACVB will share short videos of FACVB, hotel and attractions staff highlighting how they promote tourism to Cumberland County and what they love about their work. Look for videos daily on Facebook and Twitter.

On Thursday and Friday, the Tourism department will visit the I95N and I95S VisitNC Welcome Centers for their National Tourism Week celebrations. At these special events, destinations along the I95 corridor set up booths and give out treats and community information. The purpose is to thank the travelers for visiting North Carolina, and encourage visitation to each community.

The FACVB works to maximize the economic impact from travel to Cumberland County. The FACVB is funded through occupancy tax collections, collected from overnight visitors at Cumberland County hotels and administered by the Tourism Development Authority.

“Although Cumberland County residents do not fund tourism promotion efforts, they receive the benefits through tax savings and expenditures in the community,” says John Meroski, FACVB president and CEO.  “Our organization works hard to maximize the number of visitors in the community, expenditures and, in turn, taxes collected.”
